Your Laser Hair Removal Guide

Everything you need to know about your laser hair removal treatment at inglow aesthetics — from your first session to long-term maintenance.

Your Results & Treatment Course

The recommended minimum number of sessions is 6. Your final number may vary depending on the treatment area, hair colour and thickness, hormones, skin type and your individual response to laser.

Some clients need additional sessions to reach their desired result.

You may notice some reduction after your first treatment, but one session cannot target every hair. At your first visit, up to approximately 30% of hairs that are in the active growth phase can be effectively treated. Over the following weeks, treated hairs begin to shed and regrowth gradually becomes slower and less dense.

The most noticeable change develops progressively throughout your course.

After a course of treatments, you should see significantly less hair, slower regrowth and finer remaining hairs. Results vary between people and between different areas of the body.

Laser hair removal works by targeting hair follicles in their active growth phase, which is why multiple sessions are needed to treat all hairs over time. In each session, a significant portion of actively growing hairs can be effectively reduced, and overall long-term hair reduction of up to around 70-80% is commonly observed in clinical studies, depending on the individual and treatment area.

Six sessions should therefore be considered the recommended minimum rather than a guarantee that 100% of the hair will be gone.

This can be completely normal. Hair grows in different cycles, and laser works most effectively when a hair is in its active growth phase.

Hairs that were not in the right stage during previous sessions can become visible later. This is one of the reasons why a complete course and correct treatment intervals are important.

Treated hairs usually begin shedding around 1-3 weeks after your appointment. They may initially look as though they are still growing while they are gradually being pushed out of the follicle.

Let them shed naturally and avoid waxing, tweezing or epilating. Gentle exfoliation can help support the shedding process, but it should only be introduced no earlier than 2 weeks after your last laser session, once the skin has fully calmed.

This is often part of the treatment progress. As your course continues, remaining hairs may become finer, lighter and slower-growing.

Very fine hair contains less pigment, which can eventually make it more difficult for the laser to target effectively.

Unfortunately, no. Laser hair removal works by targeting pigment (melanin) in the hair. Grey and white hairs contain little or no melanin, so the laser cannot effectively target them.

It depends on how much pigment the hair contains. Darker auburn hair may respond, while very light red, strawberry-blonde or copper hair can respond poorly or not at all.

Your cosmetologist can assess the hair before starting treatment.

Yes. Hormonal changes and certain hormonal conditions—particularly androgens such as testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), as well as conditions like polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid imbalances, pregnancy and perimenopause—can influence both hair growth and how quickly new hairs appear.

This does not necessarily mean laser will not work, but you may require more sessions or more frequent maintenance than someone without hormonally influenced hair growth.

Yes. Laser hair removal can effectively reduce unwanted hair associated with PCOS, but hormonal hair growth may respond differently and can require more sessions.

Because PCOS can continue to stimulate new hair growth over time, maintenance sessions may also be needed more regularly to maintain your results.

Hair thickness, colour, density and growth cycles differ across the body. Underarms, bikini, legs and facial areas may therefore progress at different speeds even when treatments are performed consistently.

We assess each area separately throughout your course.

Timing depends on the treatment area and your individual regrowth. Your cosmetologist will recommend the appropriate interval and may adjust it as your course progresses.

Coming much earlier does not make laser work faster – there needs to be enough new active hair to treat.

Possibly. Laser provides long-term hair reduction, but hormonal changes and new follicular activity can lead to some regrowth over time.

After completing your initial course, occasional maintenance treatments may help preserve your results.

Rarely, laser treatment can stimulate increased hair growth instead of reducing it. This is known as paradoxical hair growth and is reported more often when treating the face and neck, particularly in some women with Mediterranean, Middle Eastern or South Asian backgrounds.

Sun, Tan & Laser

Yes. Laser hair removal can be performed during summer as long as sun exposure is managed correctly.

You do not need to stop your entire course for the summer, but your cosmetologist needs to know about any recent tanning or significant sun exposure before every treatment.

If you have had recent sun exposure or active tanning, your session must be postponed. We require a minimum of 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment without significant UV exposure to ensure your skin is safe to treat.

A tan does not automatically mean treatment is impossible, but timing is very important for safety.

At inglow aesthetics, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro with both Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:Yag 1064 nm wavelengths. Your cosmetologist will assess your current skin colour, natural skin type and tanning history before selecting the most appropriate and safe treatment settings.

If your skin has recently been exposed to strong sun or is still actively tanned, your appointment may need to be rescheduled until your skin has fully stabilised.

Avoid active tanning and intense sun exposure to the treatment area for at least 2 weeks before your appointment.

If you have had significant sun exposure, sunburn or your skin is still actively tanned, tell us before your appointment so we can determine when it is safe to treat.

Avoid active tanning and intense sun exposure on the treated area for at least 2 weeks after treatment.

Use SPF 50+ on exposed treated areas and cover the skin where practical.

Avoid solariums for at least 2 weeks before and after laser treatment. A solarium exposes the skin to concentrated UV radiation and increases the risk of unwanted skin reactions.

Fake tan should not be present on the treatment area when you come for laser. Please allow it to fade completely before your appointment.

If you have recently used self-tanning products, tell your cosmetologist before treatment.

We will not treat sunburned skin. Your skin needs to recover completely before laser treatment can safely continue.

Contact us before your appointment if you are unsure.

Before And Between Your Sessions

Arrive with the treatment area clean and freshly shaved the evening before your appointment. Hair should be no longer than 1 mm. If you prefer not to use a razor on areas such as the face, you may carefully trim the hair instead, ensuring it is reduced to no more than 1 mm in length. Longer hair can absorb more laser energy at the surface, which may increase the risk of discomfort, irritation or superficial burns.

Please avoid creams, oils, deodorant or other products on the area being treated.

Tell your cosmetologist about any new medications, recent sun exposure, changes to your health or skin reactions before treatment begins.

Shave the treatment area the day before your appointment (ideally 12-24 hours prior) so hair should be no longer than 1 mm above the skin.

This timing is important because it allows the skin to recover from any minor irritation caused by shaving, reducing the risk of sensitivity during treatment. At the same time, the hair is short enough on the surface for the laser to work effectively, while the follicle remains intact underneath the skin for the laser to target.

Removing surface hair also helps make the treatment safer, more comfortable, and allows for more precise energy delivery to the follicle.

No. Between laser sessions, shaving should be your only method of hair removal.

Waxing, tweezing and epilating remove the hair from the follicle. Laser needs the hair and its pigment within the follicle to absorb the energy and effectively target it.

If you have recently waxed or epilated the area, wait at least 6 weeks before your laser appointment to allow the hair to regrow and the follicles to become suitable targets again.

Classic Bikini – This treatment covers the pubic mound and the area around the panty line. If you would like to keep a line, triangle or another shape, shave according to the shape you would like us to treat.

Full Bikini – This includes the full front bikini area, labia, folds, perineum and inner buttock line. Please shave the entire treatment area.

Proper shaving helps us treat the area safely, accurately and comfortably.

Classic Bikini focuses on the pubic mound and visible areas around the panty line.

Full / Deep Bikini covers the entire intimate area, including the labia, folds, perineum and inner buttock line.

If you are unsure which one to book, our team can help you choose.

After Your Laser Session

Temporary redness, warmth or small bumps around the hair follicles can occur after treatment. These reactions are usually mild and settle naturally.

The skin may also feel slightly more sensitive than usual for a short time.

Keep the area cool and avoid rubbing or irritating it.

At inglow aesthetics, we use Bioderma Atoderm SOS Spray after treatment when appropriate to help soothe sensitive skin. Your cosmetologist can also recommend suitable home care if your skin needs additional support.

We recommend avoiding intense exercise, saunas, hot baths and other activities that create significant heat or sweating for approximately 24 hours after treatment, particularly if the skin is still sensitive.

Avoid irritating or highly active products on the treated area while the skin is sensitive. This can include retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs and strongly fragranced products.

Keep your routine gentle until the skin has returned to normal.

Yes, whenever the treated area is exposed to daylight.

Use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ on areas such as the face, arms and legs and reapply when necessary. Sun protection is particularly important around your laser appointments.

Your Skin & Our Technology

At inglow aesthetics, we use the Candela GentleMax Pro, a medical-grade laser platform combining two wavelengths:
Alexandrite 755 nm and Nd:YAG 1064 nm.

Having two wavelengths allows us to select treatment according to your skin type, hair characteristics and current skin condition rather than using the same approach for every client.

We can treat Fitzpatrick skin types I-VI.

Alexandrite is commonly used for lighter skin types, while the longer 1064 nm Nd:YAG wavelength allows us to safely treat darker skin types when appropriate.

Your skin is assessed before treatment so the wavelength and parameters can be selected accordingly.

Everyone experiences laser differently. Most clients describe the sensation as a quick snap or brief heat with each pulse, and some areas—such as the bikini or underarms—can naturally feel more sensitive than others.

Our Candela GentleMax Pro uses a Dynamic Cooling Device (DCD), which releases a short burst of cooling spray before each laser pulse to protect the skin and make the treatment more comfortable.

No. More pain does not mean the laser is working better.

Effective laser hair removal depends on using the right settings for your skin, hair and treatment area. The goal is to deliver enough energy to effectively target the hair follicle while keeping the skin safe – increasing the intensity simply to make the treatment feel stronger does not guarantee better results.

We do not laser directly over raised moles, suspicious lesions or papillomas. These areas are identified before treatment and avoided or protected where appropriate.

If a mole has recently changed in colour, shape or size, we may ask you to have it assessed by a dermatologist before treating the surrounding area.

No. Laser hair removal should not be performed directly over tattoo pigment because the laser can interact with the pigment and cause a skin reaction.

We leave a safe margin around tattoos and treat the surrounding skin where appropriate.

We do not apply the laser directly over permanent makeup or cosmetic tattoo pigment. When treating nearby areas, the pigmented area will be avoided and protected.

Can I Have Laser Hair Removal If…?

Laser hair removal is not recommended in cases of fever, pregnancy, cancer, recent sun exposure or self-tanning (within the last 2–4 weeks), use of photosensitizing medications (e.g., isotretinoin/Accutane in the past 6 months), anticoagulants, beta-blocker, antibiotics (within the last 2 weeks), active skin infections, open wounds, cold sores in the treatment area, uncontrolled diabetes or conditions affecting skin healing, history of keloid scarring or poor wound healing, and epilepsy (due to the laser light flashes); if you have any medical conditions or concerns, please inform us before your appointment to ensure a safe and effective treatment.

Always tell us about your medications, medical conditions and any changes to your health before your appointment.

If you have any active vaginal infection, such as a yeast infection (candidiasis), please wait until the infection has fully cleared before having laser hair removal in the bikini or intimate area.

Once the infection has been treated and your symptoms have fully resolved, you can continue your laser sessions as usual.

Certain photosensitising medications, including oral retinoids such as isotretinoin (Accutane) taken within the past 6 months, can affect how your skin responds to treatment. Please consult your prescribing doctor regarding the medication you are taking or have recently taken, and inform us of the details and timing. We will then advise you when it is safe to proceed.

Usually, yes, when the product is being used on a different area of the body.

If you use retinol or a prescription retinoid directly on the area being treated, tell your cosmetologist before your appointment. You may need to pause laser sessions.

It depends on the antibiotic and the condition being treated. Some medications can increase sensitivity to light, while an active infection itself may be a reason to postpone treatment.

Send us the exact medication name before your appointment and we can check it for you.

We do not perform laser hair removal during pregnancy.

If you have an active package with us, it can be paused and resumed when it is appropriate to restart your treatment.

Breastfeeding does not automatically exclude laser treatment. However, hormonal changes during this period can influence hair growth and treatment response.

Please let us know that you are breastfeeding so we can assess your treatment individually.

We do not laser over active inflammation, broken skin, infection or an irritated flare.

If only a small area is affected, your cosmetologist may be able to avoid it and safely treat the surrounding skin after assessment.

Please tell us before treatment. A history of keloid formation or abnormal wound healing requires individual assessment before laser hair removal.

Tell us exactly what type of device you have and where it is located. Some medical devices require individual assessment or medical clearance before treatment.

Dental implants, crowns and braces do not normally prevent laser hair removal.

If your face is being treated, tell your cosmetologist about them during your consultation.

Yes. Having your period does not prevent laser hair removal, although some people find their skin more sensitive around this time.

For intimate treatments, please use a tampon or menstrual cup. If you prefer to come at another time, you can reschedule according to our cancellation policy.

Please tell us before booking. Laser systems can produce bright flashes of light, so epilepsy—particularly photosensitive epilepsy—requires individual medical assessment before treatment.

Still have questions?

Every client, skin type and hair-growth pattern is different. If you are unsure about a medication, medical condition, recent sun exposure or anything else that could affect your treatment, contact us before your appointment.

Our team will advise you whether you can proceed as planned or whether your treatment should be adjusted or rescheduled.
